Seven City Brewers September 2017 Newsletter & Events

September 1, 2017

Summer is coming to and end and our kids will be back to school in a few days. Come out for the Family Day Picnic and Club Meeting on Saturday September 9th, from 12 PM to 5 PM at the Chesapeake Campground Pavilion. Chesapeake Campground is located at 693 South George Washington Hwy, Chesapeake, VA 23323. The club will provide the main course (hamburger, hot dogs, and we are getting a brisket from Red Wood Smoke Shack), sodas and condiments. Members and Guests are being asked to bring side dishes, deserts and homebrew. Please let me know if there are any special needs or request and if you would like to help in the cooking or setting up. I can be reached at

Bring your FAMILY, have fun with your kids, eat some good food, and drink homebrew. Check out the Chesapeake Campground website for camping and amenities.

Improve Your Brewing Skills With an Experienced Brewer: We are fortunate to have some very skilled homebrewers who have agreed to help our club members improve their homebrewing skills. We have 11 Seven City Brewers getting ready to brew the Dark Sour Ale for the barrel fill. Looks like late September or early October. If you would like to brew with an experienced club homebrewer email me at

2017 Seven City Brewers Challenge: We have at least 3 brewers in the Seven City Brewers Challenge. During the Family Day Picnic we will taste the Märzen and pick the one we think has the best chance of winning the HRBC Competition #5 on September 26th.

Club’s Barrel Program: We are planning on emptying the Golden Sour barrel and refilling it with a Dark Sour Ale and emptying the Rasputin barrel during the month of September. Bob Roberts is currently the keeper of the club’s barrels, he has asked the club to see if we could locate a new home for the barrels. He needs room for additional refrigeration space for his business. Once we empty the barrels we need to find a new home for them.  We are looking for a place to keep one or two barrels in a temperature controlled environment to support the barrel program. If anyone can help please let me know.

Brewer of the Year Standings: I need you all to step up and enter some homebrewing competitions and WIN before Larry takes our Beer Money. The top four Seven City Brewers as of September 1st are Larry Lentz with 80 points,  Fred Baker with 60 points, Dan Tully with 56 points, and Ed McDermott with 49 points. If anyone has entered a competition that I do not know about, please let me know so that I can update the Brewer of the Year records.

Nomination of Elected Officers for 2018: It is time to start thinking about who we want as our Elected Officers for 2018. All elected officer positions are available for anyone who is willing and able to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position being nominated for.  If you are interested in being an elected officer or if you want to nominate someone let me know. Nominations are being submitted during our September meeting with the election of new officers at the November meeting. New officers will take office in January.
